Free OpenCart extension · v1.0.0

Find and fix broken links, log 404s and redirect them in your OpenCart store.

Finds broken links and images in your product, category and information page descriptions, logs the missing pages visitors actually hit, and lets you fix both from one place: change or remove a link everywhere it’s used, or redirect a missing address to the right page. It all runs on your own store, with no account or cloud service.

Why it matters

Why links break, and why it matters

Links break all the time. Suppliers move or delete pages, manufacturers drop products, and you change your own SEO URLs. Shoppers who click land on “Page not found”, and search engines notice too.

Most of the time nobody tells you. Saral Link Checker keeps checking the links in your store’s descriptions, shows which missing pages visitors are actually hitting, and lets you fix both without opening each product.

Features

What Saral Link Checker does

Checks links and images

Links and images in product, category and information page descriptions, and blog articles in OpenCart 4.1, in every language. New links are checked within minutes of saving.

Fewer false alarms

A link is only called broken after a 404 or 410, a domain that doesn’t exist, or three failed checks in a row. Sites that block checks go under “Couldn’t check”.

Fix links everywhere at once

Change a link’s address, point a redirecting link at its new address, remove a link and keep its text, or mark it as not broken.

Undo any change

OpenCart keeps no revisions, so every description is saved before it’s changed and can be restored from the dashboard.

404 log

Every missing address visitors and search engines ask for, how often and which page linked to it. Visitors’ IP addresses are never stored.

Redirects

301, 302, 307 and 308 redirects, or 410 for pages removed for good, with a suggested target for each missing page and a visit count.

Daily email

An optional email on days when links break, and a broken link count next to Link Checker in the Catalog menu.

Light on your store

Links are checked in small batches from OpenCart’s cron job, each address only once however many products use it.

How It Works

Set it up in four steps

01
Install

In your OpenCart admin, go to Extensions, then Installer, and upload saral_link_checker.ocmod.zip. Then go to Extensions, choose the “Other” type, and install Saral Link Checker.

02
Switch it on

Open Saral Link Checker, switch it on under Settings and save. The first scan starts and runs in the background.

03
Fix what it finds

Open Catalog, then Link Checker. For each broken link, change it, remove it or mark it as not broken. Redirecting links can be updated in one click.

04
Watch the 404 log

Check the 404 log now and then, and add a redirect for missing pages visitors keep asking for. The extension suggests the closest product or page.

Good to know

What it doesn’t do

Saral Link Checker looks after the links in your store’s descriptions and the missing pages on your store. A few things are outside its job:

  • It checks product, category, information page and article descriptions. Links in modules, menus and theme files aren’t checked.
  • Some big sites, such as LinkedIn and Amazon, refuse automated checks. Those links are listed under “Couldn’t check” for you to open and confirm yourself.
  • Background checks need OpenCart’s cron job to be running on your server. Without it, links are checked only while the extension’s pages are open.
  • It needs OpenCart 4.0.2.0 or newer. OpenCart 3 and older aren’t supported.

If you already use another redirect extension, keep each redirect in one extension only.

Private by design

To check a link, your store visits it, the same way a browser does when someone clicks it. Requests go only to the addresses in your own descriptions, and nothing is sent to Saral Techies or any other service. The 404 log keeps the missing address, how often it was asked for and the page that linked to it, never a visitor’s IP address or browser.
